The Biome CVD Summit – Montreal | Opening Words Remarks by Christian Dubé, Minister of Health and Social Services, Gouvernement du Québec l Lasting Impact – How the pandemic will reshape CVD

Together, we have built a national movement for transforming Canadian CVD care, with exciting Biome CVD Summit sessions centred in Edmonton and Toronto. Today from Montreal, we build on these conversations and focus on the future. Today’s sessions will help us to create a common language and vision that will fuel greater engagement with the public and each other as we co-create the future of Canadian cardiovascular care.

COVID-19 has created unprecedented challenges and delays in managing CVD, and revealed strengths as well as vulnerabilities in our health system. How might we address the challenges posed by the pandemic and seize new opportunities to improve care?

Getting to the heart of it: Creating a common language for CV Health

Getting to the heart of it: Creating a common language for CV Health

True transformation must begin with understanding. We need to cultivate a stronger, broader appreciation of the urgency of cardiovascular health across patient populations. This means linking healthy behaviours today to long-term health over a lifetime. To build awareness of CVD and promote the benefits of prevention, we need to empower patients to share meaningful narratives about cardiovascular health. And we need to give cardiovascular health a new story to tell.

More than 700,000 Canadians live with uncontrolled LDL cholesterol, an important risk factor for CVD. The Student Challenge elicits creative solutions to get Canadians engaged and motivated about this crucial factor in long-term cardiovascular health. Students will share their bold visions for their marketing campaigns to raise public awareness and motivate actions toward healthy cholesterol management.

Breaking down CVD silos: Collaborating towards a healthier future

Breaking down CVD silos: Collaborating towards a healthier future

Preventing and reducing the burden of CVD is everyone’s business. From government to corporations, and citizens to physicians, stakeholders share responsibility to transform CVD care. To get to the heart of the matter and create sustainable change, collaboration across industries, discplines and organizations is a must.

Across three cities and virtually across the country, the Biome CVD Summit has laid the foundation for transformational change in Canadian cardiovascular care. Together, we have reimagined solutions to one of Canada’s most pressing public health challenges. In closing, we look at where our movement goes after Montreal. We have drafted a blueprint for change with the potential to improve the lives and health of millions of Canadians. Now we must carry it forward into action.
